Yes, you can definitely raise a family in a 2-bedroom condo. With organization solutions and a shifted mindset, it is very realistic for a family of four to comfortably live in a condo/apartment-style unit.
Here’s how I’m raising our family of four in a 1000 sq. ft. condo without feeling too cramped!
Welcome to our little home! My name is Lisa and I’m on a mission to turn our newly-acquired condo into a cozy home – and yes, my husband and I are raising two little ones in a 1000 sq. ft. condo.
Our Backstory
We lived in a semi-detached house before deciding to move into our current 2 bedroom condo. The house was great for the few years we were in it, but in terms of aesthetic and location, it just wasn’t serving us the way we wanted. This is when we decided to make our move from house to condominium.
When we speak to people about this, many are under the impression that we went for a downgrade – but on the contrary! We actually upgraded into a sought-after part of town with new luxury builds that we had our hearts set on. We’re very grateful!
How I’m Raising a Family of Four in a 2-Bedroom Condo
Raising a family four in a condo/apartment is definitely doable! I hope my content serves as a way to normalize families living in smaller multiplex units. There’s often a misconception that “bigger is better,” but truth be told: as long as you’re happy and healthy in your living situation, you can make any style of home work!
Here are a few ways that I’m raising my family in a 1000 sq. ft. condo, without feeling cramped:
Bins and Baskets To Stay Organized
The key in small-home living is to stay organized and contain everything as much as possible. Small items that just lay around on shelves, counters, and the floor can look unruly and take up lots of space. We make good use of bins with lids (since they’re stackable) and baskets to keep everything contained.
A Good Layout
If you’re shopping around for a condominium unit, then layout is key! We didn’t want to go smaller than 1000 sq. ft., and when we first laid eyes on our condo, we fell in love with its layout. Ours has:
- An ensuite master bathroom, which connects to the master bedroom walk-in closet (giving the unit an even more luxurious feel)
- A second bathroom for our kiddos and guests
- A mini laundry room, with enough room for a stackable washer-dryer set, a rack for drying clothes, and a sink.
- Lots of cabinets (in ratio to the kitchen size – so tiny but super functional!)
Great Amenities
Our building features amazing amenities that’s great for families of all sizes and ages. We have access to:
- Multiple swimming pools
- A family play area
- A beautiful lounge area (with a mini kitchen, piano, and pool table)
- Party room
- Two gyms
- Hot tub and dry sauna
I’m (Somewhat of) A Minimalist
I really like “stuff,” but I try to keep my “stuff” to a minimum. Ask any of my friends: I am totally one for shopping and indulging – but I aim for high quality items that last years; and I don’t overcrowd our home. In fact, I had this “minimalist” mindset start all the way back in my college years.
If you want to lead a more minimalist lifestyle, I recommend asking yourself the following questions: Does it fit your aesthetic? Will you have somewhere to store it? Will it take up too much room in your home?
Make Good Use of Vertical Space
In our home, everything always has a place. I group like items together, and every shelf, dresser, drawer is functional and serves a purpose. I love making good use of vertical space: floating shelves and general shelving units are key to keep things off the floor. Keeping your space free of clutter and off the floor as much as possible will keep your condo/apartment looking (and feeling!) bigger.
